Collaborative research made it possible for the two authors to create a classroom space that supported the literacy learning of diverse children. This partnership between Nan, classroom researcher, and Sally, university researcher, began prior to this project. As you read this article, note that we use the first person plural to refer to our joint efforts and the third person to illustrate our separate roles. At one time, we were both teacher researchers in the same primary school and collaborated in examining and improving our teaching practices as we taught 7and 8-year-olds. Our explorations continued as we read numerous professional publications and engaged in weekly discussions that led to several inquiries focused on classroomlife. Co-reflecting (Waff, 2009), or reflecting together, was the way in which we created spaces for authentic dialogue that addressed important classroom issues. After Sally left the public school system to work at a university, we remained connected and continued to investigate ways to improve classroom instruction. Over the years, the demographics of Nan's classroom changed. More and more students for whom English was a new language enrolled in the primary school and were placed in her classroom. Having no formal training in teaching students of other languages, Nan wondered how she could support and learn from these English language learners. Since Sally had a similar interest, we collaborated to design a research project centered on Nan's 2nd-graders.
